Stone Where Xishi Washed Silk
Located at the foot of Zhuluo Mountain and by the Pujiang River in the southern part of Zhuji’s urban area. Zhuluo Mountain is the hometown of Xishi, and the stone where she washed silk bears the two characters “浣纱” (Washing Silk), said to be inscribed by Wang Xizhi. This ordinary stone has acquired extraordinary value simply because of Xishi’s fame and the calligraphy of the Sage of Calligraphy, Wang Xizhi. Countless poets through the ages have sung of it, and painters have depicted it. At the northern end of the Washing Silk Stone is a high terrace with the Washing Silk Pavilion. Descending the steps along the east side of the pavilion, you’ll find a small flat area, and on the right-hand high terrace are five large stone-carved characters “西施浣纱处” (Site Where Xishi Washed Silk) written by Sha Menghai. The Washing Silk Stone is now a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.
