The entrance hall is five bays wide, with the central and side bays featuring raised-beam construction and the end bays using through-tenon construction. It is a single-story flush-gable roof structure. The stage is connected to the entrance hall and has a square floor plan. Its caisson ceiling features domed brackets and beams, with exquisitely carved and gilded decorations. The main hall has a protruding rectangular floor plan, is three bays wide with two side passages, and has interconnected front and rear roofs. It is grand in scale and constructed with premium materials.
The temple was originally named Ziwēi Marquis Temple, built to enshrine Yang Yan, a boatman who was conferred the title of “Ziwēi Marquis” by the Ming Dynasty court for protecting the nation and its people. It was destroyed during the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty but was soon rebuilt with funds raised by local residents. On March 31, 1939, while inspecting eastern Zhejiang’s defenses, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Fengqiao and delivered an anti-Japanese and national salvation speech from the temple stage to people from all walks of life, receiving a warm welcome from the local populace.
The Fengqiao Grand Temple is grand in scale, exquisitely crafted, ingeniously structured, and well-preserved. It serves as an important physical resource for studying folk temple architecture and also holds significant commemorative value.
