Zanglv Vernacular Architecture – Ma'anshan Ancient Residential Buildings and the Zhou Clan Ancestral Hall

The Ma'anshan Ancient Residential Buildings are located about two kilometers south of Wuxie Town, belonging to Shisidu Village in Zanglv Township. Constructed in the 15th year of the Zhengde era during the Ming Dynasty, they were first settled by Zhou Tingcong (Qingsan Gong), an ancestor of the Zhou clan, who came here alone to establish roots and begin the lineage. It has been 500 years since then, with 24 generations of descendants.

The recorded lineage of the Zhou ancestors can be traced back 1,000 years to Zhou Dunyi of the Northern Song Dynasty (author of "Ode to the Lotus," 1017–1073), a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar in history. As a result, the front of the Thousand-Pillar Ancient House in present-day Shisidu Village is covered with lotus flowers, making the scenery even more beautiful when visiting in June or July.

The beautiful mountains and clear waters have nurtured many outstanding talents. The Zhou clan has produced numerous distinguished individuals throughout history, including imperial examination scholars, Hanlin officials, as well as academicians and generals.

The protection of ancient towns, villages, and residences, as well as the preservation of cultural relics and historic sites, has gradually gained attention from both the government and the public with the improvement of economic conditions and enhanced awareness of conservation. Restoration and maintenance work on the Zanglv Zhou Clan Thousand-Pillar House has commenced, adhering to the principles of restoring to original appearance and preserving authenticity.

The Zanglv Thousand-Pillar House is comparable to the famous ancient architecture of Zhuji – the Si Residence Thousand-Pillar House – and remains well-preserved to this day.
