Wozhou Lake Dam
The Wozhou Lake Dam stands 70 meters high and stretches 211 meters in length.
Originally, this area was home to gentle streams, but when rainfall was uneven, residents in Xinchang as well as Shengzhou and Shangyu would suffer from severe droughts and floods. To reduce flood damage downstream of the lake area, the dam was completed in 1978. Its construction also marked an important chapter in the history of China's hydraulic engineering.
Starting in the 1980s, five cascading hydropower stations were built downstream of the Wozhou Lake Dam. Today, Wozhou Lake serves multiple purposes—flood control, irrigation, power generation, aquaculture, and tourism—bringing benefits to the local people.
