Gushan Academy
Gushan Academy is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Gushan Academy is located in Qixing Subdistrict, Xinchang County, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.
Gushan Academy, situated on the southeastern slope of Gushan Mountain in Qixing Subdistrict, Xinchang County, lies to the north of Gushan and faces Keshan Mountain to the west. It is a Ming and Qing-period academy, located on the southwestern slope of Gushan at the western edge of Xinchang County. It is the largest surviving academy building in Xinchang and even in Shaoxing City, and one of the more systematically laid out academies in the Jiangnan region, originally covering an area of 5,328 square meters.
The surviving eastern section of the academy includes buildings covering approximately 1,200 square meters. Inside the main gate, the overall layout consists of three courtyards along the central axis and three along the lateral axis. Along the central axis from south to north are the front hall, lecture hall, and library building, each rising progressively in elevation; the sides house student dormitories. The front hall is a single-story, three-bay structure, with the central bay serving as a passageway; the lecture hall, library, and dormitories are all two-story buildings. The courtyards feature winding corridors and separate rooms arranged in an orderly fashion; they are divided by courtyards for lighting and drainage; and the rooms are interconnected by covered walkways, creating a compact and convenient structure. Although the eastern study building underwent a major restoration in 1995, it retains its original layout and traditional form.
The western section of the academy still existed after the founding of the People’s Republic of China and up until the Cultural Revolution. However, due to years of neglect and disrepair, the structures had become dilapidated and dangerous. Part of it was demolished when the site was used as worker dormitories for a cement factory, and later, Shicheng Middle School built highly incongruous reinforced concrete teaching buildings on the site.
On January 7, 2011, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.
