Tongyun Bridge and the Ruins of Zhangjiawan Town’s City Wall are protected cultural heritage sites of Beijing Municipality.

Tongyun Bridge, commonly known as “Empress Xiao’s Bridge.” Originally a wooden plank bridge, it was rebuilt as a stone bridge during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty and bestowed the name “Tongyun.” The stone bridge runs north-south, featuring a triple-arch structure, with a total length of 40 meters and a width of 10 meters. Each side of the bridge is lined with 18 carved stone lion balusters and 19 relief-carved vase-shaped railings. The central arch of the bridge spans 9 meters and contains an embedded commemorative stele. Although the bridge surface now shows varying degrees of damage, the overall stone structure remains intact and sturdy. To the north of Tongyun Bridge lie the ruins of Zhangjiawan Town’s city wall. Since the Liao and Jin dynasties, Zhangjiawan Town has gradually developed into a key hub for both land and water transport due to the navigability of the Lu River and the dredging of the Tonghui River. “Myriad boats moored in unison” was once one of the Eight Scenic Views of Tongzhou. The Tongyun Bridge and the city wall ruins serve as tangible evidence for studying the water conservancy project of Beijing’s Tonghui River as well as the local customs and culture of the ancient town of Zhangjiawan.
