Canxia Cave

Located on the upper right side of Yujing Cave on Chicheng Mountain, this cave is named “Canxia Cave” (literally “Cloud-Feasting Cave”) because every morning when the rosy clouds rise, the drifting clouds seem to float into this right-hand rock cave as if being devoured. On the cliff above is an inscription reading “Autumn Frost Is Purer Than White,” written by Li Yuanhong, the President of the Republic of China during the early Republican era.

Beside the cave is a well called Jujing Well, where the character “掬 (ju)” means “to scoop up with both hands.” During the late Qing Dynasty, Qi Xiulan, a talented woman from Tiantai, lost her husband to illness and had no money for his burial. She scooped earth with her bare hands to make a grave, eventually digging out a deep hollow that later filled with water and became a well. Later generations called it “Jujing Well” (Scoop Well).

Standing in front of the cave, people look radiant under the rosy glow, making it a popular spot for morning exercise.
