Blending luxury and glamour: 5 new hotels set to open in China

From 2014 to 2017, luxury hotels will open successively in Ningbo, Beijing, Shanghai, and Macau. These include the strong entry of Europe’s oldest luxury hotel brand, as well as casino operators expanding their customer base by combining accommodation with gaming facilities. Each highlights dazzling exteriors and high-end lodging experiences, aiming to win over travelers' hearts.

1. NingboLangham Place, Ningbo Cultural Plaza (Opening in 2014)

Ningbo boasts profound Chinese cultural heritage and is also one of China’s fastest-growing cities. Global hotel operator Langham Hospitality Group has recognized this potential by establishing its 8th hotel in mainland China—the Langham Place, Ningbo—in the city’s eastern new district.

The Langham Place, Ningbo consists of143 modern and stylish guest rooms, along with 20 luxurious suites; even more notable is the presence of three on-site restaurants, including the sister property of Hong Kong’s renowned Michelin two-star restaurant—Ming Court—which serves authentic Cantonese cuisine and local specialties. The elegant Brasserie Bland also offers a wide selection of wines and gourmet dishes, making it a true “gourmet paradise” for food lovers.

Located in the heart of Ningbo, the hotel is surrounded by art galleries, museums, a civic fitness center, theaters, and shopping venues, making it an ideal base for exploring the city’s hotspots.

2. Sunrise Kempinski Hotel at Dawn, Beijing (Opening in 2014)

In May 2014, Kempinski Hotels—Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group—opened its largest property in China. The Sunrise Kempinski Hotel at Dawnis located 60 kilometers from central Beijing, in the core scenic area by Yanqi Lake, and features a total of 595 rooms.

Situated by Yanqi Lake and adjacent to the majestic Yan Mountains, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel at Dawn offers a natural retreat with lakeside greenery that feels like living amidst nature’s charm. Covering an area of 14 square kilometers, the main building is the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel at Dawn, which has 306 rooms, while the Yanqi Lake Boutique Hotel and 12 Yanqi Lake Boutique Villas are located on the lake’s central island, with 111 and 178 rooms respectively.

The hotel houses 14 restaurants and bars, and also featuresa private yacht marina and an 18-hole golf course, providing guests with a wealth of outdoor options in ultimate luxury.

3. W Shanghai – The Bund (Opening in 2015)

As one of the world’s leading international financial centers, Shanghai is a vibrant and fashionable city. The Bund is even known as the “Wall Street of the East.” The W Hotel is set to open here in 2015, perched on one of the world’s most bustling urban streets.

The upcoming W Shanghai – The BundThere are a total of 600 rooms and suites, all decorated in a Shanghai-style design.It offers exquisite and elegant venues for gatherings, world-renowned gourmet restaurants, and is filled with a vibrant urban atmosphere, allowing guests to experience the dreamy charm of “Night Shanghai.”

Adjacent to the Huangpu River, known as the “Mother River of Shanghai,” and facing the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower across the river, W Hotel boasts an exceptional location with breathtaking night views of Shanghai’s never-sleeping cityscape.

4. MGM Cotai (Macau) (Opened in 2016)

MGM has long been renowned for its gaming operations in Macau, and now it is set to open a new hotel in 2016.The new property is expected to feature 1,600 additional rooms, 500 gaming tables, and 2,500 slot machines, yet non-gaming areas will account for 85% of the total space.This reflects a strong emphasis on expanding retail and entertainment experiences for guests.

5. MGM Cotai – Fifth Hotel Tower in Macau (Opened in 2017)

The fifth hotel tower of MGM Cotai in Macau will open in 2017,featuring 780 rooms, suites, and villas.Its facilities are designed to exceed five-star standards.

The design of this hotel was overseen byZaha Hadid, the “Queen of the Curve” in the architecture world.Judging from the architectural renderings, the exterior design is nothing short of extraordinary. Known for her expertise in fluid forms, she crafted a bold and magnificent façade. The figure-eight shape at the center of the building is inspired by the Chinese cultural belief that the number 8 symbolizes luck.

The hotel has 40 floors and includes a variety of conference and event facilities. At the 30-meter-high level, there is a grand atrium lobby, specialty restaurants, a spa, and a rooftop outdoor pool, all delivering a surprisingly innovative experience for guests.
