Tianhu Scenic Area

Situated 2 kilometers west of the city center and 3 kilometers from the Tiantai exit of the Shangsan Expressway, Tianhu Scenic Area blends culture and nature, making it an ideal spot in Taizhou for travel, vacation, conferences, and outdoor training.

The scenic area features a range of interactive leisure options including rock climbing, fishing, boating, zip-lining, a water park, and a playground. A three-star hotel is under construction and will soon be completed and opened to visitors.

Tianhu Scenic Area is known for its “three-tiered lakes,” consisting of Lower Tianhu, Middle Tianhu, and Upper Tianhu, which create a beautiful layered effect with clear, azure waters. The area is also famed for its “spectacular rock formations,” highlighted by attractions such as Guanyin Rock, Ji Gong Rock, Ape Howl Rock, Buddha’s Palm, Panda Playing with Turtle, Stone Sheep Worshiping Buddha, Divine Sparrow Drinking from the Waterfall, and Ancient Ape Praying to the Heavens.

This is also the place where Master Zhiyi, the founder of the Tiantai sect of Buddhism, practiced and attained enlightenment. It is the true birthplace of the Tiantai sect — the first school of Buddhism to be Sinicized. The site features cultural landmarks such as the Ancient Buddha Cave, Ancient Cliff Facing the Rising Sun, and the Qianlong Imperial Stele. Literary giant Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty, master calligrapher Mi Fu, talented Ming Dynasty figure Tang Bohu, and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty all visited this area and left behind their inscriptions.

Additionally, the scenic area boasts three of the largest attractions in the Yangtze River Delta region: the biggest cliff-carved Maitreya Buddha, the largest Hall of the God of Wealth, and the largest ancient stone-carved characters.
