A drive-in theater is where audiences watch outdoor movies from their own cars by tuning in to a radio frequency. It is one of the entertainment formats derived from the highly developed automobile industry. Since June 6, 1933, when Richard M. Hollingshead opened the world’s first drive-in theater in his backyard in New Jersey, USA, this form of leisure activity quickly gained popularity across North America as cars became more widespread, eventually becoming a significant cultural hallmark.

As an important symbol of car culture, drive-in theaters have appeared all over the world. Why do we call it “Cowboy”? “Cowboy” is the most representative term in the United States, embodying the spirit of freedom, which perfectly aligns with the theme and atmosphere of a drive-in theater. It’s also the feeling we aim to create for our customers — hence the name “Cowboy.”

American Town · Tongzhou Cowboy Drive-In Theater was established in 2010 and officially launched in August. It created China’s first themed drive-in theater, China’s first outdoor digital cinema, and China’s first outdoor metal screen, laying the foundation for the technical development of drive-in cinema. During its two years of operation, American Town · Tongzhou Cowboy Drive-In Theater organized and planned over a hundred successful car enthusiast events. At the same time, it witnessed hundreds of romantic love confessions by couples alongside its patrons, and became the designated youth hub activity center of Tongzhou District, providing a platform for young people to socialize.
