Shimen Cave Cliff Inscriptions

Shimen Cave Cliff Inscriptions is a treasure trove of historical relics and boasts the longest timespan (423–1964 AD) and highest density of carvings among cliff inscription groups in Zhejiang Province. Spanning over 1,500 years from 423 AD to 1964 AD, it carries profound historical and cultural significance.

Beginning with the Southern and Northern Dynasties poet Xie Lingyun’s 423 AD inscribed poems “New Camp at Shimen” and “The Highest Peak of Shimen,” and ending with the most recent work — a 1964 inscription by the eminent modern poet Guo Moruo during his visit to Shimen Cave: “Crossing the Shimen crossing, Liu Ji’s shrine still stands; / The waterfall soars to the skies, its coolness inspiring verse.” This vividly depicts the majestic presence and poetic ambiance of the Shimen Waterfall.

The cliff inscriptions gather masterpieces from literati across dynasties, totaling 105 in all — 80 cliff inscriptions and 25 stone stelae. The cliff inscriptions are mainly found on two mountains, Qigu and Qigu, with 16 pieces, while 64 are located at the “Moon Cave” to the left of the waterfall and dragon pool, plus 25 stone stelae.

The forms of the cliff inscriptions include signatures, poetic inscriptions, and records, featuring a variety of scripts such as regular, clerical, Wei, running, cursive, and seal. The content primarily praises the grandeur of the Shimen Waterfall and the seclusion and wonder of Shimen Cave. Especially notable is the 112.5-meter-high “Soaring-to-the-Sky Waterfall,” renowned worldwide. The phrase “High enough to gaze from, clear enough to wash in, deep enough to hide within, serene enough to enjoy, fragrant enough to gather, and wondrous enough to sing of” perfectly captures the splendor of Shimen’s scenery.
