Pujiang Museum

The most distinctive architectural feature of Pujiang Museum is that it integrates the provincial-level cultural heritage site “Zhang Family Ancestral Hall” as its core, along with newly built modern exhibition facilities, and opened to the public in October 2002.

The museum's current collection includes cultural relics from the Neolithic Age through the Ming and Qing dynasties to the old and new democratic revolutions, with basically all historical periods represented by research-worthy artifacts. One of the most important parts of the museum’s collection is the Neolithic jade, stone, and pottery artifacts unearthed from the provincial-level cultural heritage site “Shangshan–Tangshanbei Relics,” excavated at the archaeological site.

The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall serves both as a major exhibit and a main exhibition hall of the museum. It currently houses permanent exhibitions such as the Ancient Excavated Relics Exhibition, Bamboo Weaving and Bamboo & Wood Root Carving Craftworks Exhibition, and Production Tools and Daily Life Items Exhibition. A temporary exhibition hall has also been set up in the newly built western section of the museum, where rotating temporary exhibitions are regularly introduced to enhance the diversity and appeal of the displays.

“Shangshan · Tangshanbei Relics Excavated Artifacts Exhibition Hall”

The Tangshanbei Relics site is a Neolithic Age site and the first Liangzhu Culture cemetery discovered south of the Qiantang River. The Shangshan Relics date back approximately 10,000 years, making it one of the earliest known Neolithic sites in China. The relics show clear transitional features from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic Age. Rich remains of cultivated rice were found at the site, proving that the lower Yangtze River region is one of the earliest cradles of rice agriculture in the world. The artifacts on display in the exhibition are some of the finest items excavated from the Shangshan–Tangshanbei Relics in 2001.

“Bamboo Weaving and Bamboo & Wood Root Carving Craftworks Exhibition Hall”

Pujiang is honored by the Ministry of Culture as the “Hometown of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy” and the “Hometown of Chinese Folk Arts.” The legacy of traditional art styles has deeply infused local production and daily life, making Pujiang’s folk crafts and arts rich, unique, exquisitely crafted, and distinctive. With a focus on local characteristics, the museum has specially arranged a Bamboo Weaving and Bamboo & Wood Root Carving Craftworks Exhibition. Most of the bamboo weaving craftworks displayed in the museum are fine pieces collected from the Pujiang Arts and Crafts Factory.

“Production Tools and Daily Life Items Exhibition Hall”

Pujiang’s terrain is mainly fragmented lowlands and hills, higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast. The fertile land, hardworking people, and the Pujiang River—which originates in Pujiang—have provided favorable conditions for the development of an agrarian economy. Traditional farming tools such as plows, hoes, and mortars may appear simple, but they are highly scientific in design; ancient beds, tables, chairs, cabinets, and other wooden items showcase exquisite craftsmanship and can be considered works of art... A variety of production tools and daily life items quietly tell the stories of hardship and glory in the agrarian society within this century-old building.
