Foyun Mountain Scenic Area

Foyun Mountain is located in Shuangxi Village, Suxi Town, northeastern China. Centered around Shuangxi Village, it is bordered by Furong Mountain and Jinzhuping to the north, Shiwu Rock to the east, Daopeng Rock and Lion Rock to the south, and the lower-lying Qiaoxi Reservoir to the west.

The Qinglong Stream and Huanglong Stream flow gently from east to west, converge at Shuangxi Village, and then flow westward into Qiaoxi Reservoir, forming a ten-mile-long river. The banks feature continuous towering peaks and steep cliffs, rolling bamboo seas, and ancient trees reaching to the sky, creating beautiful natural landscapes.

Starting from the city area and driving north, you can enjoy views of Qiaoxi Reservoir, Jialongkou, “The Monk Carrying the Nun,” the “Ten-Mile River,” the Screen Rock, and “Two Buddhas in Reflection.”

Daopeng Rock behind Shuangxi Village is part of the “Golden Armchair” scenic cluster, also known as the Foyun Fairyland. At an altitude of over 700 meters, the mountain features uniquely shaped rocks resembling an armchair. It showcases “spring waterfalls, summer cool breezes, autumn mists, and winter icicles.”

The cliffs, dozens of feet high, are lined with strange rocks stretching about a kilometer. Nearby are Moon Bay, Moon Tree (an ancient cypress),

which resembles osmanthus in the moon, Stone Bell and Stone Bamboo Shoots, the Sky-Gazing Beauty, as well as a group of naturally formed Buddha statues, some cradling smaller Buddhas, vividly lifelike, rivaling those in heaven.

The Xianying Cave, located at the active Dragon Mouth of Shishihuo in Maozhuwu, has a cave entrance that strikingly resembles a lion’s mouth. Inside the cave, the “Xianying Mansion” was originally built in 1448 and renovated in 1994. There are 1,857 stone steps leading to Xianying Cave, along which you’ll find dozens of attractions such as the Immortal Spirit Pagoda, Lion Face Rock, Lion Rock, and Rock 0.

One kilometer north of Shuangxi lies Maocao Wu, where a massive rock resembles either a jade rabbit or a flat fish. Legend says Sun Quan titled it the “Jade Rabbit.” Nearby are the “Azure Dragon” and Azure Dragon Pool, known as the Jade Rabbit Playing with the Dragon. The sunset over the Dragon Pool is said to be a breathtaking sight. Other sights include “Fierce Tiger Descending the Mountain,” “Mandarin Ducks Playing with a Turtle,” and the natural bonsai Welcoming Pine. The area is flanked by steep cliffs, offering unique scenery.

Further ahead lies the thousand-acre bamboo forest of Lixigang. Here stands a thousand-year-old black branch tree, hollow inside yet thick-skinned, with lush branches and leaves. Surprisingly, seven thick green bamboos grow inside the embrace of the black branch tree.

Legend has it that the black branch tree, rejuvenated and longing for offspring, prayed to Guanyin of the South Sea for a child. Guanyin replied, “You live in a bamboo sea—aren’t there plenty of bamboos?” The black branch tree then embraced the bamboos as its children. Some call this “the love between tree and bamboo,” others “having bamboo in one’s chest.” Truly, the world is full of wonders. Travel expert and university professor Fu Wenwei described it as “a spectacle unparalleled in the world.”

Foyun Mountain Scenic Area is one of the sources of the Puyang River. Due to its short course, significant elevation drop, and the undulating mountains on both sides, the water flows swiftly and features many waterfalls. These streams meander through deep forests or cascade down cliffs, with large rocks and intertwined vines, birdsongs and floral scents filling the air—embodying the ruggedness and mystery of nature.
