The Longshan Ancient City Ruins in Anji consist of the Anji Ancient City Ruins and the Longshan Yue Aristocratic Tomb Cluster. It is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the western Tiaoxi River basin of northern Zhejiang following the Liangzhu Site. In 2013, the State Council designated it as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units. In March 2016, the National Cultural Heritage Administration held a high-level expert inspection and evaluation meeting in Anji, concluding that the Longshan Ancient City Ruins in Anji and the Liangzhu Site are representative of two major world cultural eras in Zhejiang Province—ancient Roman times (Spring and Autumn–Warring States Period) and ancient Egyptian times (Neolithic Age). Their historical significance qualifies them as national-level major archaeological sites.
Located in Ancheng Town, Anji County. In the 16th year of the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty (738), Magistrate Kong Zhidao relocated the county seat from Tianmuxiang (later renamed Kaofeng County, now Xiaofeng Town) to the southeastern foot of Qingshan Mountain, and later to the present site of Ancheng Town. At that time, there was no city wall. In the late Yuan Dynasty, Commander Fei Yu and Administrator Zhang Junde, under imperial order, began constructing an earthen wall in the year of Bingshen (1356). The following year, the wall was rebuilt and extended to a length of six li (approx. 3 kilometers), with a height of over two zhang (approx. 6.6 meters). There were four city gates: the eastern gate named Yingchun (Welcoming Spring), the southern gate called Chaoyang (Facing the Sun), the western gate known as Baocheng (Treasure City), and the northern gate termed Gongchen (Arching the Morning Star). During the Hongwu years of the Ming Dynasty (1372–1373), County Magistrate Zhang Shiliang built watchtowers at the four gates. In the 32nd year of the Jiajing era (1553), Prefect Lin Bi renovated the walls and reconstructed the watchtowers and patrol stations. Subsequent dynasties, both Ming and Qing, carried out multiple renovations. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China to the present, apart from the Yingchun Gate, which was dismantled to make way for road construction, the other three city gates remain intact, all with arched roofs. The Chaoyang Gate was renovated by the county government in 1987 due to long-term disrepair and its low, narrow roof, which was also raised. The city walls historically served not only defensive purposes but also flood prevention. Ancheng was located close to the Xitiaoxi River, where floods frequently occurred in history. Stone sluice grooves were built on the outer side of the city walls, standing 1.66 meters high and 9 centimeters wide. When floods surged, boards could be placed on the grooves to block the water. Today, the sluice grooves and the moat still remain. It is now a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit.
