Shangmakan Site

Age: Paleolithic Era

The Shangmakan Site represents a purely Paleolithic culture. An excavation of 18 square meters yielded 45 Paleolithic specimens. The raw materials for the stone artifacts were mainly quartz sandstone and sandstone. Choppers, stone balls, and picks were common. The craftsmanship of the stone tools was primitive and rough, with flaking techniques primarily using the hammering method and rotational striking method. The retouching of the stone tools was all done by hammering. The individual stone artifacts were large, with lengths exceeding 80 millimeters, and very few specimens were less than 50 millimeters. It belongs to the gravel stone tool culture of the Southern Paleolithic Era and marks a major breakthrough in the province’s Paleolithic archaeological research.

The discovery of the Shangmakan Paleolithic cultural site has filled a gap in Zhejiang’s Paleolithic archaeology, pushing the history of human activity in Zhejiang back over 100,000 years. It provides rare and valuable new data for studying the distribution and characteristics of the main industries of the Southern Paleolithic Era. It is the first clearly stratified, distinctly dated, and well-preserved Paleolithic cultural site discovered in the province.
