Huangluo Buddhist Temple

Huangluo Buddhist Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

The beams and ceilings inside the temple are exquisitely carved, displaying an imperial elegance. It is the only temple in the Yangtze River Delta region that features the architectural style of northern China.

Located in Nianbang Village, Yangcheng Lake Town, Xiangcheng District, Suzhou, it lies to the east of Yangcheng Lake, with Guanjing River flowing behind the temple. The temple is surrounded by water on three sides, featuring corridors, waterside pavilions, and beautiful scenery. With crisscrossing waterways, rows of willows along the banks, and lush greenery, the scenery is picturesque and pleasant. It is the only temple in the Yangtze River Delta region that features the architectural style of northern China.

The temple was originally built during the mid-Tang Dynasty and was initially named Jishan Nunnery. At that time, it enjoyed flourishing incense offerings, attracting worshippers from all over southern Jiangnan. During the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era, the nunnery was renamed “Wanglu Nunnery,” meaning a place where royal officials and nobility once stayed—hence the names Guanjing Bridge and Guanjing River that remain to this day. Later, it is said that Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty stayed here overnight while searching for his father during his southern tour, leading to its renaming as “Huangluo Nunnery.”

Huangluo Buddhist Temple is a renowned Buddhist site in Suzhou and also the location of the Suzhou Buddhist Association. With a long and ancient cultural history, it serves as an ideal venue for religious activities as well as a destination for tourism, sightseeing, and leisure.
