Jinxi Ancient Town
Jinxi Ancient Town is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
Located in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, Jinxi Ancient Town neighbors Shanghai to the east and borders Suzhou to the west. It is 60 kilometers from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and 8 kilometers from the ancient town of Zhouzhuang.
The ancient town of Jinxi gets its name from a small stream within the town that is as colorful as a brocade ribbon. The water surrounds the town, streets and alleys hug the waterways, and ancient bridges stand side by side. It has long been reputed to have “36 bridges and 72 kilns.”
Since ancient times, Jinxi has been a gathering place for literati and poets. The famous Western Han Dynasty general Ma Yuan trained his troops here; the Three Kingdoms-era general Zhang Zhao, who assisted the ruler of Wu, is buried here; the great Eastern Jin Dynasty painter Gu Kaizhi once lived in seclusion here; the Tang Dynasty literary figure Lu Guimeng spent most of his later years residing here; Song Dynasty poet Wu Wenying, top imperial scholar Wei Jing, Yuan Dynasty figure Ma Zhiyuan, and Ming Dynasty “Jiangnan talents” such as Tang Bohu, Zhu Yunming, Wen Zhengming, and Shen Zhou all composed poetry and prose here one after another.
Jinxi was also the place where a Southern Song Dynasty imperial concubine met her tragic end. Historical records indicate that in the late Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty, the beloved concubine Chen of Emperor Xiaozong Zhao Gou passed away. She was buried at sea on the Five Treasures Lake in Jinxi, and as a result, Emperor Zhao Gou decreed that the town be renamed for over 800 years.
