Zhouzhuang:
During the vibrant New Year season, the ancient town of Zhouzhuang launches a series of themed events called “Celebrating the New Year in Zhouzhuang.” A string of New Year programs forms an authentic celebration of traditional customs. On the first day of the lunar new year, the most joyful activity is the “Spring Ox Beating.” As the saying goes, “Touch the Spring Ox’s waist and wealth will come your way; touch its tail and good fortune and longevity will follow you.” People scramble to grab the five grains hidden in the belly of the shiny golden “Spring Ox” and touch the ox for good luck. The “Welcoming the God of Wealth” event on the fifth day of the first lunar month is even more lively, featuring golden ingots, ancient coins, and bat symbols representing prosperity—all signs of stepping onto a path of wealth and fortune. After the event, enjoy a cup of Yuanbao Tea (Ingot Tea) to “take home” the blessings and wealth. During the Lantern Festival, Zhouzhuang is picturesque, with all kinds of dazzling lanterns adorning the streets. Admiring and playing with the lanterns is extremely delightful, and there’s also a lively Lantern Festival evening party.
