Qiandeng Ancient Town is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Qiandeng Town is located in the Yangtze River Delta, under the jurisdiction of Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, covering an area of 84 square kilometers with a population of 120,000, including 50,000 local residents and 70,000 migrants. It lies 15 kilometers south of Kunshan City. To the east, it borders Qingpu District of Shanghai, 30 kilometers from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport; to the west, it neighbors Suzhou, 35 kilometers from the city center of Suzhou.

Qiandeng Ancient Town is a renowned historical and cultural town in Jiangsu Province, boasting a history of 2,500 years. The town is rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, often referred to as the "Golden Qiandeng." It is the hometown of Gu Yanwu, an eminent thinker, litterateur, and patriotic scholar from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, whose famous quote "The rise and fall of the nation concerns everyone" has inspired countless people. As far back as the Neolithic Age, ancestors lived and thrived here, creating splendid prehistoric civilization. It is beautiful, prosperous, ancient, and full of vitality, still retaining a grid-like layout of "roads alongside waterways" and the classic quaint charm of "small bridges, flowing water, and traditional houses." "I didn’t expect Qiandeng to be even smaller. To put it bluntly, it’s just a small temple, a dilapidated pagoda, a stone-paved street, and a few former residences of notable figures. There’s nothing much to see or eat." If this is your impression of Qiandeng, then you’re not a true traveler—just someone without refined taste.

Qiandeng Ancient Town is a historical and cultural town; a cursory visit won’t leave lasting memories. To truly appreciate Qiandeng, one must explore its culture.

Qiandeng has been home to many historical figures, notably Gu Yanwu and Gu Jian. Historical sites include the Qinfeng Pagoda and the Ancient Theater, while culturally distinctive shops include Ju Zhen Tang and Ya Wan Ge. Take Gu Yanwu, for example: his famous saying, "The rise and fall of the nation concerns everyone," has influenced generations of patriots. As a great scholar of the feudal era, though his moral conduct, scholarship, and writings were limited by the constraints of his time, his progressive impact on later generations remains indelible.

Qinfeng Pagoda — also known as the Sakyamuni Pagoda, is located on the west bank of Shangshu Pu in Qiandeng Town. Originally built in the second year of the Tianjian era during the Liang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties (503 AD). Donated by local resident Wang Shu, who offered his residence, and initiated by Monk Congyi, who founded the Boruo Temple, local resident Wang Jue also donated property to expand the temple's foundation and construct this pagoda. Named Qinfeng Pagoda because it sits on the sunny side of Qin Zhu Mountain. By the first year of the Dazhong Xiangfu era in the Song Dynasty (1008 AD), Boruo Temple was renamed Yanfu Chan Monastery, and Qinfeng Pagoda was also rebuilt. From then, it has a history of over 900 years.

Ya Wan Ge is a carving workshop showroom of less than twenty square meters. Inside the shop is a craftsman named Ya Feng, an upright folk artist. The shop owner is a native local lady named Fangfang. The shop displays a miniature boat—recreating the famed "Core Boat" from the Ming Dynasty's Wang Shuyuan, documented in “The Record of a Carved Boat”—measuring just 4.5 cm in length, 2 cm in width, and 2.1 cm in height. This tiny boat has two levels, with eight windows, each able to open. The boat features 29 figures, each no larger than a soybean, yet every facial feature is clearly visible. The boat is also carved with decorations such as peonies. It is truly exquisite and breathtaking.

The ancient town is open all day; smaller attractions within the town are open from 8:00–17:00 in summer and 8:30–16:30 in winter.

Ticket Information:

Free admission. The ancient town itself is free to enter. A joint ticket for smaller attractions within the town (including Yu’s Pawnshop, Yanfu Chan Temple, Gu Jian Memorial Hall, Ancient Theater, Qiandeng Lantern Museum, Gu Yanwu’s Former Residence, and all other minor sites) costs 60 RMB for adults. Children between 1.2 m–1.4 m, students, and seniors aged 60–69 from Jiangsu Province receive half-price tickets with valid ID. Children under 1.2 m, seniors over 70, active military personnel, and people with disabilities enjoy free entry with valid ID.

Qiandeng Town: Qiandeng was formerly known as Qiandun. According to the “Songnan Zhi” (Chronicles of Songnan) by Chen Yuanmo of the Qing Dynasty, located 36 li southeast of Kunshan County in Chuan Township, there is a waterway called Qiandun Pu. As the Song River flows eastward from Wumen to this point, there were a thousand or more mounds north and south of the river, hence the name Qiandun. In the second year of the Xuantong era of the Qing Dynasty (1910), it was renamed Qian Dun, with two legends explaining the origin: one being a refined literary reference, the other due to the abundance of madder plants on the mounds. In April 1966, approved by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Committee, it was renamed Qiandeng, the name it retains to this day.
