Kunshan National Agricultural Demonstration Zone - Datang Eco-Agricultural Park

Established in 2005, the Kunshan National Agricultural Demonstration Zone - Datang Eco-Agricultural Park is a modern urban agricultural industry base built by Qiandeng Town to maintain ecological sustainability. It is an important component of Qiandeng’s tourism resort, which focuses on ancient town tourism and extends to eco-agricultural leisure tourism. The park covers a total area of over 12,600 mu and integrates agricultural eco-tourism, science education displays, production of high-quality agricultural products, farming experiences, dining and entertainment, as well as conference and reception services into a highly efficient urban agricultural leisure and sightseeing destination.

The park is currently divided into three core functional areas: the Eco-Agricultural Leisure and Sightseeing Zone, the High-Efficiency Agricultural Comprehensive Development Demonstration Zone, and the Modern Fisheries High-Efficiency Aquaculture Experience Zone. The Eco-Agricultural Leisure and Sightseeing Zone spans 2,600 mu and features facilities such as connected greenhouses, a glass restaurant, an eco-clubhouse, an agricultural expo hall, a science and technology training center, and a renowned trees cultural garden, focusing mainly on agricultural leisure and sightseeing. The High-Efficiency Agricultural Comprehensive Development Demonstration Zone covers 5,000 mu and is divided into three major sections: high-quality grain and oil seed area, protected cultivation of fruits and vegetables area, and high-quality fruit area.

The Qiandeng Modern Fisheries Breeding Base covers an area of 5,000 mu and mainly consists of five functional zones: seedling cultivation zone, three-dimensional aquaculture zone, scenic lake fishing and leisure zone, tailwater purification and treatment zone, and production management service zone.

To date, 19 products from the park have been certified as green food by the China Green Food Development Center. Since 2005, the eco-park has successively earned titles such as “National Agricultural Tourism Demonstration Site,” “Jiangsu Provincial Agricultural Sightseeing Park,” “Jiangsu Provincial Four-Star Rural Tourism Destination,” “Jiangsu Provincial Environmental Education Base,” “Suzhou Municipal Ecological Civilization Education Base,” Suzhou’s “Top Ten Modern Agricultural Demonstration Parks,” Suzhou’s “Top Ten Garden-Style Units,” “Kunshan Municipal Off-Campus Moral Education Practice Base for Minors,” and “Kunshan Municipal Science Education Base.” The vegetables and fruits produced under the “Datang Farm” brand have been recognized as Suzhou-branded products. In 2010, the park was also awarded “Suzhou Municipal Advanced Collective in Rural Tourism” and “Suzhou Municipal Consumer Satisfaction Unit.”

Qiandeng Town: Qiandeng was formerly known as Qiandun. According to the Songnan Zhi (Chronicles of Songnan) written by Chen Yuanmo in the Qing Dynasty, located 36 li southeast of Kunshan County in Chuanshan Township, there is a waterway called Qiandun Pu. The name originated because the Songjiang River, flowing eastward from Wumen, passed through this area where there were nearly a thousand mounds on both banks, hence the name Qiandun (Thousand Mounds). In the second year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1910), it was renamed Qian Dun, with two legends explaining the origin: one suggesting it was an elegant term used by literati, and the other attributing it to the abundance of madder plants (Qian Cao) growing on the mounds. In April 1966, with the approval of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Committee, it was renamed Qiandeng, the name it retains to this day.
