Attraction Introduction

Kunshan, where Zhouzhuang is located, is the birthplace of Kunqu Opera. To promote traditional culture, Zhouzhuang has restored and rebuilt the ancient stage. The ancient stage, the horse-galley style viewing building, the exhibition hall, and other structures surround the central square, making the entire architectural complex resemble a Beijing courtyard. After purchasing a ticket to enter Zhouzhuang, visitors can enjoy the performances here for free.

The numerous wooden-carved phoenixes at the center of the ancient stage form a phoenix caisson ceiling, which functions as a “high-end sound system” using the principle of resonance, making the performances even more melodious. For specific performance times and repertoire, you can check the signboard at the entrance of the ancient stage. Generally, Xiju Opera is performed on Thursdays, featuring plays such as "The Pearl Tower," while Kunqu Opera is performed from Mondays to Sundays except Thursdays, featuring plays such as "The Peony Pavilion." You can watch the performances while sitting on the chairs in the open-air square, or you can go to the teahouse opposite the stage, buy some tea and snacks, and enjoy the show while dining.

When there are no performances, the ancient stage is also open, and you can view exhibits on traditional performing arts and displays of opera costumes.
