Former Site of Chenmu District Office

The former site of the Chenmu District Office is a protected cultural heritage site under Jiangsu Province.

The former site of the Chenmu District Office is located at the corner of Tianshui Street and Xiatang Street in Jinxi Town. In the early years of the Republic of China, autonomous township offices were established in Chenmu under Kunshan County and Wuxi County, respectively, with township directors overseeing daily affairs. In 1929 (the 18th year of the Republic), Chenmu in Kunshan County was designated as the Sixth District, and a separate town office was set up for Chenmu. Between 1936 and 1939 (the 25th to 28th years of the Republic), the Sixth District Office of Kunshan County was located in Chenmu Township. From 1942 to 1946 (the 31st to 34th years of the Republic), the 11th Special District Office of Kunshan County was established in Chenmu. A separate township office was also maintained under Wuxi County. In 1946 (the 35th year of the Republic), the building was used as a branch chapel of the Kunshan Baptist Church. After the liberation, church activities stopped, and it is now used as a residence.

From Municipal Protection to Provincial Heritage: “Chenmu District Office”

The existing structures at the former site of the Chenmu District Office include two two-story buildings, both with flush-gable roofs, covering a total area of 220 square meters.

Jinxi Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Kunshan City. Historically known as Jinxi, it was renamed Chenmu Village during the Southern Song Dynasty, and later Chenmu Town during the Qing Dynasty. In 1958, the Dianxi Commune was established, which was renamed Chenmu Town in 1962, then into Mao Commune in 1965, back to Chenmu Town in 1981, and finally renamed Jinxi Town in 1992. Located in the southwestern part of the city, it is 23 kilometers from downtown. Covering an area of 82.1 square kilometers, it has a population of 48,000. Multiple highways pass through the area. It is a typical water town with navigable waterways.
