Former Site of Wufeng Flour Mill

The former site of Wufeng Flour Mill is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The former site of Wufeng Deji Flour Mill is located in Xiaomaidupo Village, Chaoyang Subdistrict, Kunshan City. The industrial activity in this area began in the 1930s. Visionary grain merchants such as Zhang Guoliang raised funds to establish Jifeng Flour Mill in the 31st year of the Republic of China (1942). In the same year, Wufeng Flour Mill opened for business at Zhengyang Bridge. In July of the 33rd year of the Republic of China (1944), Wufeng Flour Mill relocated to a newly built three-story factory building at Xiaoximen, expanding production with the number of single mills increased to seven and daily flour output reaching 500 sacks.

The existing former site of Wufeng Deji Flour Co., Ltd. is a four-story brick-concrete structure built in the 33rd year of the Republic of China (1944), with a floor area of 552 square meters. The main structure is well preserved and largely retains the architectural features and style of the Republican era. The national industries of the Republican period had a profound impact on China's science and technology, economy, and society, and industrial heritage stands as a historical testament to that influence. The former site of Wufeng Deji Flour Mill is an industrially significant relic that offers future generations insight into the trajectory of China’s industrial development, especially the progression of modern industrialization. Currently, it is the only remaining industrial site from the Republican period in Kunshan. It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Kunshan City in 2009 and underwent restoration in 2010.

In December 2011, it was announced by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units.
