Innyu

Innyu is a cultural heritage site protected by the Suzhou Municipal Government.

At the corner where Nanhou Street’s Lower Section meets Chayuan Front, there is a courtyard known as “Innyu.” It is a building that blends Chinese and Western architectural styles from the Republican era, covering a land area of 256.68 square meters and a construction area of 150 square meters. The house faces south, with a width of two bays at 8.3 meters and a depth of seven rafters spanning 7.65 meters, standing 5.9 meters tall, with an eave height of 2.5 meters and a flush-gable roof. The northern side of the house faces Chayuan Front River, which once had an inner river dock. Later, due to urban development needs, Chayuan Front River was filled in, and the inner river dock disappeared as well. Therefore, the current “Innyu” is not entirely in its original form. The residence originally belonged to the Lu family, then later to the Wang family, and was once the home of the world-renowned Chinese-American “computer king,” Dr. An Wang. In the 1930s, An Wang’s father, Wang Chuánxūn, ran a medical practice in this house, where An Wang spent his childhood and adolescence.
