This name came about because the Songjiang River, flowing eastward from Wumen, reached this point where there were nearly a thousand islets on both sides of the river, hence the name Qiandun (Thousand Islets). In the second year of the Xuantong reign (1910), it was renamed Qiantun, with two legends explaining the origin: one claims it was an elegant term used by literati, the other says it was due to the abundance of madder plants growing on the islets. In April 1966, upon approval by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Committee, it was renamed Qiandeng, the name it still carries today.
Qiandeng is located in the Yangtze River Delta and is under the jurisdiction of Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province. It covers an area of 84 square kilometers and has a population of 130,000, among which... More details about Qiandeng Town ++
