Zhouzhuang Mei Residence

The Zhouzhuang Mei Residence is a cultural relics protection unit of Suzhou City.

The Mei Residence is located on Meiyangbang in Zhouzhuang Town. Built during the Republic of China era by Taoist priest Lu from Chengxu Taoist Temple, it faces south with a northern orientation. Currently, three sections of the building remain intact, along with two brick-carved gate towers, covering an area of 309 square meters.

The Mei Residence has now been transformed into the Xianjiang Fishing Song Fisheries Museum. Zhouzhuang is known as a “town of waters,” situated in the ancient tri-river basin of the East Taihu Lake — Dongjiang, Songjiang, and Loujiang — with numerous lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Its fishing history dates back 5,000 years to the Liangzhu Culture period. “Xianjiang Fishing Song” was one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Zhouzhuang during the Qing Dynasty, once described in evocative verses: “Fishing boats on the Xian River, nets emerging and disappearing, the soft creak of oars, and melodious, graceful songs drifting through the air,” reflecting a poetic and expansive atmosphere.

In 2009, the Mei Residence was designated as a cultural relics protection unit of Kunshan City.
