Attraction Introduction

Fuyuan Garden is situated on the original site of Xie Fuchun, a century-old perfume powder brand that relocated here in the 16th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1867 AD). The surviving structures include a flower hall and two sections of the old residence. In Fuyuan Garden, you can watch the "Thousand Autumns of Rouge" performance, which features traditional performing arts by charming Yangzhou women—both delightful to the ears and pleasing to the eyes.

Walk past the archway inscribed with the three characters “Xie Fuchun” to reach the ticket office. Visiting Fuyuan Garden is free if you’re not watching the show. After passing the ticket office, turn left into the round gate marked with the two characters “Fuyuan Garden” to enter the garden. The garden is compact, not crowded, and blends classic Yangzhou architecture with gardens and gray-brick, gray-tile buildings. There are three ancient peony trees in the garden, all planted during the Tongzhi reign by the garden owner. On the Rouge Tower, you can see wax figures of the “Twelve Beauties of Yangzhou.”

The "Thousand Autumns of Rouge" performance in Fuyuan Garden includes Yangzhou opera, storytelling, ballad singing, and Yangzhou puppet shows. The stage is small, but the effects are good, and the performers are dedicated. Complimentary tea is provided, and the show lasts about one hour. Performances for individual visitors are only in the evening, but sometimes there are daytime shows for tour groups. If you happen to be exploring the garden as an individual visitor during those times, you might hear the melodious tunes of southern Chinese opera drifting through the garden—or even spot the performers.

Right at the entrance of Fuyuan Garden is the Dongguan Street historical district. After visiting the former site of Xie Fuchun, consider stopping by the Xie Fuchun shop to pick up some souvenirs. Xie Fuchun’s duck egg face powder is hailed in many travel guides as a “must-buy Yangzhou souvenir,” especially popular among girls. Be aware that the ones priced around a hundred yuan are for facial use, while those around twenty yuan are only solid perfumes to place in your wardrobe—your clothes will end up smelling wonderful.
