Pi Shi Street was once Yangzhou’s “Fur Street.” Furs have long been a symbol of fashion and elegance. In historically prosperous Yangzhou, the fur trade naturally thrived, eventually giving rise to an entire “Fur Street.” This street is Pi Shi Street.

As one of the symbols highlighting the character of the ancient city's historic streets, Pi Shi Street uses granite flagstones for its pavement. The fur traders on Pi Shi Street were mostly from other regions. They brought their hometown’s specialty snacks to Yangzhou, such as mutton shops, steamer basket shops, sesame pancake shops, and bellows shops. The alleys where these small shops were located gradually became known by name — Mutton Alley, Steamer Basket Alley, Big Sesame Alley, Little Sesame Alley, and Bellows Alley, among others.

Today, these alleys still exist alongside Pi Shi Street. Though relatively quiet now, they remain the most faithful witnesses to the liveliness they once knew.
