Shuren Hall

Shuren Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

Shuren Hall is located at No. 13 Huaihai Road, Yangzhou Middle School, Guangling District, Yangzhou City. Built in 1930, it is a building that combines a teaching laboratory and an auditorium, funded by donations from teachers and students of Yangzhou Middle School. It was hailed as the premier building in Northern Jiangsu at the time, consisting of an auditorium, a science building, and a standard height platform. Its comprehensive experimental facilities were rare for that era.

Shuren Hall faces east and covers a construction area of approximately 2,000 square meters. The overall layout is airplane-shaped, with a flat roof. The front section consists of a porch and wing buildings forming the front building, which is 28 meters wide. The main building has three floors, with parts extending to four or five floors. The middle section houses the auditorium, and the back houses the stage. During renovations in 1965, the flat roof of the auditorium’s audience hall was replaced with a gable roof due to safety concerns, while the rest largely retained its original form. It currently still functions as a laboratory building and an auditorium. Shuren Hall is an outstanding example of modern architecture in the Yangzhou area, notable for its distinctive architectural features and significant historical and artistic value.

Shuren Hall is an important historic building preserved within Yangzhou Middle School. Yangzhou Middle School is a century-old prestigious school with fine traditions and profound historical legacy. Shuren Hall embodies the school’s consistent educational philosophy of “cultivating people”—developing individuals who are “strong, upright, and practical” to meet the demands of the times, and individuals who are “upright and aspiring” to fulfill societal needs. Guided by this “cultivating people” philosophy, Yangzhou Middle School has enjoyed the reputation of “Yangzhou Middle School in the south, Nankai Middle School in the north” since its establishment. From Shuren Hall have emerged national leaders such as Jiang Zemin, renowned scholars like Zhu Ziqing, over forty academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a large number of elites who have made great contributions to China’s development. It is now a patriotic education base of Jiangsu Province and a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

In December 2011, the People's Government of Jiangsu Province listed it as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units.
