Residential Complex on Dazhima Lane

Located at No. 18, 20, 34, 36, and 36-1 Dazhima Lane, the buildings feature architecture from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period. The complex centers around No. 36, with No. 34 to the east and No. 36-1 to the west, all facing south. The residence at No. 18 is an early Republican-era building. The house faces south with a front and back section, consisting of a three-bay, two-wing symmetrical layout connected by a central courtyard. This house retains its original structure intact, with wooden doors and windows preserved in their original form. The residence at No. 20 is a Qing Dynasty building. It features a water-milled brick-carved gate tower and a two-bay entrance hall. Inside, there used to be a three-bay flower hall to the north, now rebuilt; to the west is a second gate leading to a small entrance hall, with a central courtyard and four successive three-bay, two-wing residential sections to the north, all interconnected by courtyards. The interior structure and lattice doors and windows of this building are all well preserved. The residence at No. 36 has a screen wall at the front inscribed with the brick-carved characters “Hongxi” (meaning great joy). The residence consists of four successive sections. The first is the entrance hall with three bays; upon entering, there is a central courtyard surrounded by corridors on three sides. The second section is the main hall with three bays and a front covered porch. The third and fourth sections are three-bay, two-wing residences interconnected by courtyards. The residence at No. 34-1 has three successive sections: the first is a three-bay study with a wing room (dragon’s tip) to the east; the second and third are three-bay, two-wing residences. The residence at No. 36-1 also has three successive sections: the first is a three-bay guest room; the second and third are three-bay, one-wing residences. The screen wall at No. 36 has been rebuilt as the rear wall of a residential house. This residential complex is well preserved and currently serves as residential housing.
