The Yang Family Residence on Dacao Lane

A residence from the Qing Dynasty. The structure faces south and consists of five courtyards in a row: the gatehouse, the ceremonial gate wing, the main hall, and two subsequent residential sections. All have flush gable roofs, covering a total floor area of 337 square meters. The ceremonial gate is a finely laid brick archway, while the main hall is three bays wide, featuring a cypress wood rolled shed in front adorned with carvings of carp. The third and fourth courtyards are also three bays wide each. According to property deeds, it was built during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty and later purchased and inhabited by Yang Youting (also known as Yang You). Yang once held a fifth-rank official position in the Qing court and, in the early years of the Republic of China, served as the head of the Provincial Niter and Sulfur Bureau, overseeing the civil monopoly of these materials in the Jiangsu and Shanghai regions.
