The Residence of the Zou Family is a protected cultural heritage site of Yangzhou City.

The Residence of the Zou Family

Located at No. 7 Shixiang, during the Republican era, Zou Yuliang, a senior staff member of the Yangzhou Salt Industry Guild, purchased this old residence as his home. The main gate of the building faces east and is situated on the west side. It features a brick-carved gate tower. Upon entering, there is a three-bay entrance hall, with two horse stalls extending two bays to the north and south of the hall. Moving into the courtyard and heading southwest, there is another brick-carved gate. Passing through this gate leads to a small courtyard, with a main residential structure that is three bays wide facing north and seven bays deep facing south, featuring a seven-rafter roof. The space is tall and spacious. The courtyard floor is paved with bluestone slabs, and the main hall’s floor, laid with blue bricks, remains largely intact. The main rooms have wooden flooring and wooden panel walls, with lattice windows and doors all well preserved. To the south of the courtyard are four rooms facing north across a four-room hall. South of the hall, there was originally a three-room flower hall, which has now been converted into living quarters. However, the original structure of the flower hall remains unchanged, and the architectural style of the original building can still be seen. This residence is a relatively well-preserved example of a large family home from the late Qing and early Republican periods and is currently inhabited by descendants of the Zou family.
