Shu Well

Shu Well is a cultural relic protection unit of Yangzhou City.

Shu Well

Located at the site of the former Shangfang Temple in the northeastern suburbs of Yangzhou, now within the compound of Han’gou Middle School. Shangfang Temple was also known as the Tang Dynasty’s Chanzhi Temple, or Zhuxi Temple. A line from the Tang poet Zhang Hu’s poem — “Life is best spent dying in Yangzhou, where the hills of Chanzhi make fine burial grounds” — refers to this place. The well lies behind the temple and is also called the “First Spring.” Originally, a stone stele inscribed with “First Spring” stood beside the well, but it no longer exists. The original well curb is no longer present and has been replaced by a later reconstruction. The well features a square bluestone platform, with brick-lined walls.
