The original site of Wuxi Jiangjian Park in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, was Jiangjianzhu. With a long history, profound cultural heritage, and abundant ancient architectural remains, it is a rare geomantic treasure among cities along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Opened to the public on April 30, 2003, Jiangjian Park is triangular in shape with a perimeter of about 800 meters, surrounded by water on all sides. The “Nostalgic Wharf,” adorned with overturned small boats, wooden oars, fishing lamps, and wine jars, evokes memories of the glorious history of this once-famous center for ceramics and grain trade in China. The themed landscapes and water features in the “Wu Charm and Chu Rhythm” area showcase the unique charm of the ancient canal and Jiangjianzhu’s water town scenery.

Jiangjian Park boasts an excellent location, offering the best panoramic views of the ancient canal. It is situated in the Beitang section of the ancient canal that runs through the city, right at the midstream of the canal where it branches off—one branch flows southeast toward the West Gate, while the other heads northeast via Lianrong Bridge. Standing within the roughly triangular Jiangjian Park, visitors enjoy unobstructed views in all directions and a rich array of sights, sparking deep thoughts and reflections.

Looking east, the canal branch coming from the northwest splits into two streams flowing northeast and southeast respectively. Across the channel (the distributary connecting the southern and northern canals), the bustling atmosphere of the city center—marked by high-rise buildings—comes into view. To the west, the broad and mighty ancient canal, stretching endlessly from upstream, surges dynamically into the city, adorned with the “waistbands” of Wubridge and Jiangjian Bridge. Observing the changing scenes along its banks evokes a strong sense of the passage of time, while also admiring how its vitality has endured for millennia. To the south, high-rise and mid-rise residential buildings line up across the canal in the Longchuanbang area. To the north, the Beitang Street across the canal, currently under renovation, never fails to impress.

What’s also praiseworthy is that as an urban river-centered park, Jiangjian Park not only embodies the beauty of a large aquatic bonsai in the city but also offers the serene and tranquil charm akin to a “waterborne Penglai.” The vast surrounding canal space acts as a natural dust filter and noise barrier. The lush greenery dominated by seasonal plants, the waterfront promenade encircling the canal, thoughtfully placed diverse leisure facilities, and the shade and shelter provided by the majestic Jiangjian Bridge spanning the western end of the park all make it a pleasant destination year-round, whether in the scorching summer or the snowy winter. True, you won’t find the classic old canal riverside dwellings like those in NanChang Street’s canal alleys here, but you’re also spared the cramped, corridor-like sense of confinement that comes with them.
