New Fourth Army Four-County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Memorial Hall

The New Fourth Army Four-County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Memorial Hall is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a classic red tourism destination.

The New Fourth Army Four-County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Memorial Hall was originally the “Yee Hee Wine Shop” in Baoyan Town, covering a land area of 3,600 square meters and a building area of 2,668 square meters. The structure was built in 1921 and was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit by the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government in March 1982. The building showcases a typical architectural style that blends Chinese and Western elements, with scientific design, ingenious conception, and exquisite craftsmanship, belonging to the Suzhou garden architecture style.

Remarkably, the compound includes a watchtower, a sentry tower, an overhead passage, and underground tunnels, all strategically distributed to provide exceptionally robust defenses. In September 1995, the memorial hall was completed and opened to the public. Its name was inscribed by General Zhang Aiping, former Minister of National Defense and Vice Premier of the State Council.

On June 15, 1938, Chen Yi led the First Detachment of the New Fourth Army to Baoyan, establishing headquarters, political department, and logistics offices in Qianhuang Village, Baoyan Town. Chen Yi and other leaders resided and worked in the compound of the Yee Hee Wine Shop in Baoyan Town.

On July 7, 1938, to commemorate the first anniversary of the outbreak of the War of Resistance, Chen Yi convened a representative assembly of people from all walks of life in Zhenjiang, Jurong, Jintan, and Danyang counties at the Yee Hee Wine Shop compound in Baoyan Town, to prepare for the establishment of the Four-County Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Committee (also known as the Four-County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces). At the same time, the first proclamation issued after the New Fourth Army’s eastward advance—“A Call to the Anti-Japanese People to Crush Puppet Organizations Such as Autonomous Maintenance Committees”—was promulgated. This proclamation is now a national first-class cultural relic. After the establishment of the Four-County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces, district chiefs were appointed, and various levels of mass anti-Japanese organizations were overseen. The forces collected taxes and grain, mobilized enlistments, gathered military supplies, and effectively supported the main forces of the New Fourth Army, contributing to the establishment, development, and consolidation of the Maoshan Anti-Japanese Base Area.

In 1993, the 11th People’s Congress of Dantu County decided to establish the New Fourth Army Four-County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Memorial Hall. In September 1995, the memorial hall was completed and opened to the public. It has been designated as a “Zhenjiang Patriotic Education Base” and a “Zhenjiang Primary and Secondary School Moral Education Base” by the Zhenjiang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal People’s Government, and named a “Jiangsu Provincial National Defense Education Base” by the Jiangsu Provincial Military District and the Jiangsu Provincial National Defense Education Committee. To date, the memorial hall has received millions of visitors from all sectors of society and primary and secondary school students, as well as a large number of veterans and former leaders of the New Fourth Army, including former Kunming Military Region Commander Zhang ?xiu, former Jiangsu Provincial Party Secretary Han Peixin, former Jiangsu Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection Secretary Kang Di, former Fujian Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection Secretary Wang Man, and Professor Li Zhongjie, Deputy Director of the Party History Research Office of the CPC Central Committee.
