The Boiling Wells are a cultural relic protection unit of Zhenjiang City.

The Ji Zi Temple in Danyang is renowned not only for its historic sites such as the Cross Tablet, the Water-Draining Stone, and the Ji River Bridge, but also for its unique natural wonder — the bubbling springs of the Boiling Wells.

The Boiling Wells of Ji Zi Temple are primarily situated around the Boiling Well Pond in front of the temple. According to historical texts, there were once a hundred wells in this area in ancient times, some of which were boiling wells. Currently, six ancient boiling wells remain. Their waters appear in three clear and three murky states, each spaced about a foot apart. From a distance, the well rims look quaint and elegant, exuding a unique charm; up close, the water inside churns and boils noisily. This extraordinary spectacle amazes visitors. In addition, within the streams and ponds surrounding the temple, there are multiple continuously bubbling springs, which locals refer to as “dragon qi,” calling the Boiling Well Pond the “Dragon Pool” or “Boiling Pool.”

It is difficult to verify exactly when the Boiling Wells first appeared at Ji Zi Temple, but according to the book “Yi Yuan” (Garden of Marvels) by Liu Jingshu of the Southern Dynasties, the wells were already widely known more than 1,600 years ago during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Visiting Ji Zi Temple and witnessing the Boiling Wells was something that officials, scholars, and literati throughout history greatly aspired to do. Zhang Zhengjian of the Southern Dynasties visited and later wrote the poem “Passing by Ji Zi Temple,” which includes the lines: “Wild vines creep over the boiling wells, mountain rain wets the mossy tablet.” This is the earliest known poetic reference to the Boiling Wells. Furthermore, famous figures throughout the ages such as Li Bai, Sadula, and Shen Deqian all left immortal poems and writings after visiting the wells.
