Taiwan’s First “Cabbage Street” Opens – Free Cabbage Tastings to Support Farmers

Taiwan’s first-ever “Cabbage Street” has been established. Starting at noon today (the 20th), DanYang Street in Taipei City will host a two-day “Everyone Helps with Cabbage” event, led by Bazi from the Good People’s Hall, who will be selling cabbages on the street to support Taiwanese farmers. After the two-day sales campaign, local eateries along DanYang Street will also “add cabbage” to their menus during the harvest season, serving specially prepared cabbage dishes for customers.

Bazi, a member of the post-2000s generation, founded the Good People’s Hall over a year ago to prevent rising prices from being used as an excuse by middlemen to justify price hikes. The initiative directly sources produce from farms and brings it to Taipei, offering consumers more affordable vegetable prices through straightforward street sales—while also ensuring farmers receive fairer returns without exploitation by middlemen.

In the early days of the hall, Bazi and his partners often sold goods such as pumpkins, sweet potatoes, corn, iron eggs, and chrysanthemum tea during office workers’ lunch breaks, hawking produce at the corner of DanYang Street and Lane 61, LinSen South Road.

“If you’re looking for a place to sell vegetables, how about setting up in front of my shop?” Thanks to the persistence of Bazi and his team, this short street lined with over ten eateries experienced a significant ripple effect. Word spread from one store to the next, and shops began displaying flyers for the Good People’s Hall at their entrances, supporting these hardworking young people fighting for Taiwanese farmers. Cabbages priced at just 25 NT$ each were not only cheaper than most supermarkets but also became some of the finest-quality cabbages available in Taiwan.

Recently, with cabbage prices plummeting again, Bazi transported more cabbages to Taipei and revisited what he calls “Cabbage Street.” “I want to give these cabbages away for everyone to eat.” “No way, I want to buy them!” Moved by Bazi’s dedication, shop owners once again offered up space in front of their stores for the sales effort and even began stir-frying fresh cabbages on-site for visitors to sample.

“Come on over, come eat some cabbage!” On November 20 and 21, visitors to this uniquely Taiwanese “Cabbage Street” can enjoy free, fresh, and delicious cabbages straight from the hands of Taiwanese farmers. After the two-day event, shops displaying “Everyone Helps with Cabbage” posters will also start selling freshly stir-fried cabbage to customers.
