Yanghe Old Pit Complex

The Yanghe Old Pit Complex is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The Yanghe Old Pit Complex was first built during the Ming Dynasty. As the earliest physical embodiment of the "Jianghuai School" strong-aroma Baijiu brewing technique in China, it has endured through the Ming, Qing, Republic of China, and People's Republic of China periods. It is hailed as the "living fossil of Chinese Baijiu pits" and is one of the most well-preserved, largest in number, longest-used, and richest in microbial diversity brewing pit complexes in China. The old distillery workshop was first built in the 1940s and has operated continuously for over 70 years, witnessing the inheritance and development of China’s traditional Baijiu industry. The underground wine cellar has just been approved as part of the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units, making it the only national-level key protected cultural relic related to the storage phase of Baijiu production.
