Former Site of the Jintan Comfort Station

The Former Site of the Jintan Comfort Station is located at No. 32, Huoxiang, Yanhe East Road, Jincheng Town, Jintan District. Originally the residence of the local landlord Chen Zijing, it was occupied by the Japanese army after the fall of Jintan and converted into a comfort station. The building was constructed during the Qing Dynasty, consisting of a large courtyard complex. The main structure features Qing-style architecture, built with brick and wood, using blue bricks and coated with white plaster on the exterior. The interior is divided into two smaller courtyards, east and west. The eastern courtyard includes two sections of buildings: the first section is 11 meters wide and 5.8 meters deep, while the second is 11 meters wide and 10 meters deep, with a 3.8-meter-wide courtyard between them. The western courtyard has three sections: the first is 16.4 meters wide and 11.4 meters deep, the second is 16.4 meters wide and 6 meters deep, and the third is 16.4 meters wide and 11.4 meters deep. During the Japanese occupation of Jintan, the comfort station housed approximately 15 women from Japan, Korea, and China. On August 15, 1945, the Japanese army announced its surrender, and on August 20, Jintan County was liberated, leading to the withdrawal of Japanese troops to Danyang. Thereafter, the Huoxiang comfort station was repurposed. On July 3, 2009, it was discovered and registered during the third national cultural relics survey in Jintan City. On December 15, 2009, it was shortlisted among the “Top 20 New Discoveries of the Third National Cultural Relics Survey in Jiangsu Province.” On January 18, 2010, it was selected as one of the “Top 10 New Discoveries of the Third National Cultural Relics Survey in Jiangsu Province.” In May 2010, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jintan City by the Jintan Municipal People’s Government.

On December 17, 2011, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit of the seventh batch by the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government.

Jincheng Town: Jincheng Town is the political, economic, and cultural center of Jintan City—one of the nation’s hundred star counties (cities). Covering an area of 103.1 square kilometers with a population of 186,000, it is a typical Jiangnan “land of fish and rice.” Since ancient times, it has been renowned for its abundant produce and prosperity. It enjoys reputations such as “a place blessed with outstanding people and rich culture” and “a blessed land east of the river.” The famous mathematician Hua Luogeng was born here. Historical sites in the town include the Hua Luogeng Memorial Hall and the Duan Yucui Memorial Hall. Nearby tourist attractions mainly include the world-famous Taoist sacred site—Maoshan.
