Fuxing Island Park

Fuxing Island is located in the eastern part of Yangpu District, downstream of the Huangpu River. The island has undergone two name changes. In 1905, when the Huangpu River was first regulated, it was called Zhoujiazui Island due to the nearby natural village of Zhoujiazui. After the Japanese occupation in 1937, it was renamed Dinghai Island, after Dinghai Road. In 1945, it was renamed Fuxing Island to commemorate the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. Development began in 1927 with the construction of factories and oil depots. By 1934, it became the base of the Wharf Dredging Bureau. After 1949, it became a concentrated area for Shanghai’s fuel, timber, petroleum, and commercial storage and transportation warehouses.
