Fudan University

Fudan University was founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School and was officially named Fudan University in 1917. The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the Medical School of the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, established in 1927. It was renamed Shanghai Medical School in 1932 and Shanghai Medical University in 1985. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University to form the new Fudan University. This integration broadened its academic scope and enhanced its educational capacity, developing it into a comprehensive research university encompassing 11 disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art.

Currently, Fudan University has 32 directly affiliated schools (departments) and 16 affiliated hospitals (5 of which are under construction). The university offers 70 undergraduate majors, with 35 first-level disciplines authorized to grant doctoral degrees, 41 first-level disciplines authorized to grant master's degrees, 2 professional doctoral degree programs, 27 professional master's degree programs, and 35 postdoctoral research stations. There are 12,881 full-time undergraduate and junior college students, 16,929 graduate students, and 3,043 international students. The university employs 2,799 teaching and research staff. It has 42 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 118 Central “Thousand Talents Plan” scholars, 133 Ministry of Education “Chang Jiang Scholars,” 34 chief scientists of the National Key Basic Research Development Program (including Major Scientific Research Program), 97 National Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 distinguished humanities professor, and 11 senior humanities professors.

The university has 17 disciplines ranked among the top 1% in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), including Chemistry, Materials Science, and Clinical Medicine, which are in the top 1‰ globally. Fudan University has 11 national key first-level disciplines, 19 national key second-level disciplines, and 7 disciplines selected for Shanghai’s Tier I and II Peak Discipline Programs. It houses 5 national key laboratories, 5 engineering research centers under the Ministry of Education, 13 key laboratories under the Ministry of Education, 9 key laboratories under the Ministry of Health, 1 key laboratory under the General Logistics Department of the PLA Health Department, 15 key laboratories under the Shanghai Municipal Government, and 4 engineering research centers in Shanghai. In addition, there are 9 key research bases for humanities and social sciences under the Ministry of Education. The China Institute has been selected as one of the first pilot units for the National High-End Think Tank Initiative, the School of Marxism has been chosen as one of the first National Key Marxist Schools, and the Secretariat of the “China University Think Tank Forum” is based at Fudan. The university ranks 43rd and 96th in the latest QS and U.S. News World University Rankings, respectively—both placing it 3rd among universities in China.
