Tongji University

With a long history and outstanding reputation, Tongji University is one of China’s earliest national universities. It is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education and co-built with the Shanghai Municipality. After 110 years of development, Tongji University has become a distinctive, internationally influential, comprehensive, research-oriented, and global university, ranking among the top domestic universities.

The predecessor of Tongji University was the German Medical School founded in 1907 by German doctor Erich Paulun in Shanghai. The following year, it was renamed Tongji German Medical School. In 1912, it merged with the newly established Tongji German Technical School to form the Tongji German Medical and Technical School. In 1917, it came under Chinese administration and was successively renamed Tongji Medical and Engineering School and Private Tongji Medical and Engineering College. In 1923, it was officially named Tongji University, and in 1927, it became a national university. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, Tongji University underwent six relocations, moving successively through Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangxi, and Yunnan. In 1940, it settled in Lizhuang Ancient Town in Yibin, Sichuan, where it continued its educational mission. After returning to Shanghai in 1946, it developed into a comprehensive university known for its five major faculties: Science, Engineering, Medicine, Humanities, and Law.

During the nationwide restructuring of university departments and faculties that began in 1949, Tongji University’s former strong disciplines in humanities, law, medicine, science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, shipbuilding, and surveying were either transferred to support other universities or relocated inland in their entirety. At the same time, civil engineering and architecture-related disciplines from over 10 universities across the country were consolidated at Tongji, making it the largest and most comprehensive engineering university in China in the field of civil engineering and architecture. After 1978, the university implemented “two transformations”: resuming exchanges with Germany and shifting from a closed-door education model to an open one, as well as transforming from an engineering university focused on civil engineering to a multidisciplinary university with a focus on science and engineering. In 1996, the Shanghai Urban Construction College and the Shanghai Building Materials Industry College were merged into Tongji, which was then listed as a university under the national “211 Project.” In 2000, it merged with the Shanghai Railway University to form the new Tongji University. In 2002, it was included in the national “985 Project.” In 2003, the Shanghai Aviation Industry School was placed under the administration of Tongji University. In 2004, it was listed as a centrally administered university.
