Shanghai University of Finance and Economics originated from the Department of Commerce established in 1917 at Nanjing Higher Normal School, with Yang Xingfo, a renowned social activist and patriotic democrat, serving as the head of the department. In 1921, as part of the plan to build National Southeast University on the foundation of Nanjing Higher Normal School, the Department of Commerce was expanded, reorganized, and relocated to Shanghai, where it was established as the Shanghai College of Commerce under National Southeast University — the earliest business school in China’s educational history. The college was headed by the distinguished educator Guo Bingwen, with the renowned economist Ma Yinchu serving as the academic dean.

In 1932, it became an independent institution and was officially named National Shanghai College of Commerce, being the only national-level undergraduate institution specializing in commerce in China at the time. In 1950, the school was renamed Shanghai College of Finance and Economics. In 1985, it was renamed Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2000, the university came under the administration of the Ministry of Education, having previously been managed by the Ministry of Finance, and is now jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

Through the hard work and dedication of several generations, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has grown into a multidisciplinary key university with a focus on economics and management, and a coordinated development across economics, management, law, humanities, and science. The university covers an area of 826 acres and has three campuses, with the main campus located at 777 Guoding Road. As of September 2016, the university had 1,044 full-time teachers and a total enrollment of 21,355 students, including 14,695 full-time students. By student category, there were 8,019 undergraduates, 5,914 master's students, 1,130 doctoral students, and 864 international degree-seeking students (with an additional 1,159 long-term students).
