The historic building complex of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology – Siping Hall

The historic building complex of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology – Siping Hall is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

Siping Hall was built in 1915. Its name, “Siping,” commemorates Dr. Manley J. Breaker, the first secretary of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society (also known as the American Mishiuli Baptist Mission). The construction cost of 9,400 US dollars was raised by President Francis C. Woodward from the American Mishiuli Baptist Mission. The four-story building features a portico at the entrance, designed in the Corinthian order, with pointed arches in the doorways and some windows, reflecting a Gothic architectural style that also aligns with the institution’s religious character. The exterior walls are constructed of plain blue bricks, with red bricks used for detailing. The original roof was sloped, but during a major renovation in the 1970s, the pointed roof was replaced with a flat one. The building now serves as the Third Dormitory of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
