Historic Building Complex of University of Shanghai—Simmons Hall

Built in 1920, Simmons Hall is designed in the Gothic Revival style. The entrance at the bottom has pointed arches, and the large triangular gable on the roof gives a sharp upward impression, much like the spire of a church bell tower. The building’s exterior is constructed from red bricks, with rectangular flat windows framed by white stone-like moldings. The roof is double-sloped and covered with red tiles.

Former Site of University of Shanghai, No. 516 Gongjun Road

The building was originally the lower secondary school building and was later converted into student dormitories for the university. It now serves as the Second Administrative Office Building of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.

In 1920, the lower secondary school building (Simmons Hall, also known as Melrose Hall) was completed. The construction cost was $49,100, donated by American individuals. It was used for classrooms and dormitories for first and second-year secondary school students.
