The Historical Building Complex of University of Shanghai—Richmond Hall

Richmond Hall was built in 1922 with a grant of $32,100 from the American Southern Baptist Convention. Originally serving as the upper division of the middle school, it shares the same architectural style as Thurston Hall and now functions as the First Office Building of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.

In the autumn of 1922, the White Swimming Pool was completed. The pool was proposed and funded by faculty and students in September 1920 to commemorate the 50th anniversary celebration of President F. L. H. Willis. In winter, the upper division of the middle school (Richmond Hall) was completed. The construction cost was $32,100, funded by the American Southern Baptist Convention, and named after the city of Richmond, headquarters of the Southern Baptist foreign mission board, in commemoration. It served as classrooms, dormitories for third and fourth-year middle school students, and the middle school auditorium. Located west of the lower division of the middle school, it shares the same structure and architectural style as Thurston Hall. The completion of the upper division of the middle school marked the end of the previous practice of co-locating university and middle school education.
