Historic Building Complex of University of Shanghai – Shifford Hall

Built in 1936, Shifford Hall was originally a dormitory for female faculty members and was named in honor of Mrs. Henrietta Hall Shuck from Virginia, USA. It now functions as the International Exchange Center. The structure is made of brick and wood and showcases an eclectic architectural style. The windows are square, and the white stone-like window frames contrast with the fair-faced red brick walls. The south façade features relief-style round arches, balconies supported by scrolled corbels adorned with foliage patterns, and an exposed triangular gable with visible wooden framing.

In 1936, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the University of Shanghai, funds were raised to build the University Auditorium; White Chapel was constructed in memory of former President Dr. W. W. White; and Shifford Hall (Virginia Hall) was built in honor of Mrs. Henrietta Hall Shuck from Virginia, USA, serving exclusively as a dormitory for female faculty members at a construction cost of $5,900. Mrs. R. E. Chambers, a university trustee and the wife of faculty member R. E. Chambers, built a detached residence which was later donated to the university. On September 30, the foundation-laying ceremony for the University Auditorium and White Chapel was held, with the architectural plans drawn by a renowned American engineer. Also in that year, an indoor playground (Play Shed) for the primary school was constructed.
