Former Site of the Yangshupu Works of the Gas Company

The former site of the Yangshupu Works of the Gas Company is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

The former site of the Yangshupu Works of the Gas Company is located at No. 2524 Yangshupu Road. The Yangshupu Gas Factory was established in 1932 and went into operation two years later. The factory featured the then-advanced continuous vertical Wootz-type carbonization production process, and included the construction of two sets of 82-inch, 30-hole core water-gas heaters, as well as mechanical equipment for tar, crude benzene, desulfurization, and other purification and recovery systems. It also had steam and electric gas blowers, compressors, and gas holders. Upon completion, the Yangshupu Gas Factory produced 113,000 cubic meters of gas per day, including 56,700 cubic meters of water gas, accounting for 80% of the city's total gas consumption. Key structures on the site include the factory office building and gas holders.

The development of natural gas from the East China Sea in this century phased out the original town gas, turning this site into a piece of history.

The site still preserves an old office building built during the same period as the factory. It is a three-story structure with a floor area of approximately 1,185 square meters, featuring a brick-concrete hybrid structure and facing south. The building exhibits a modernist style, with string courses between floors, yellow glazed brick walls, decorative corner quoins, and partial ornamental pediments on the north façade. It was designated as a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai in 2014.
