Old Shanghai Museum

The Old Shanghai Museum is a municipal-level cultural heritage site.

The Old Shanghai Museum is located in the imaging building of Changhai Hospital at 174 Changhai Road, designed to resemble the structure of a traditional Chinese drum tower. It is one of the buildings of the "Greater Shanghai Plan," constructed in 1934. Designed by Dong Dayou in a fusion of Chinese and Western architectural styles, it was built by Zhang Yutai Heji Yingchang.

Resembling Beijing’s Drum Tower, it features a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof with glazed tiles and is surrounded by stone-like balustrades. The exterior is constructed from artificial stone blocks. It stands 24 meters tall, with a floor area of 1,900 square meters, and took two years to complete. The museum officially opened to the public in February 1936 with its first exhibition, the "Chinese Architecture Exhibition," which attracted over 40,000 visitors, marking an unprecedented success.

In 2014, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site.
