The Old Shanghai Municipal Hospital

The Old Shanghai Municipal Hospital is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

The Old Shanghai Municipal Hospital is located in Building 21 of Changhai Hospital and is one of the buildings from the "Greater Shanghai Plan." Construction started in 1934. It was designed by Dong Dayou and constructed by the Lu Genji Construction Company. The originally planned Old Shanghai Municipal Hospital was to have this main building at its center, with eight equally sized buildings arranged in a fan shape. However, it seems that only this main building remains. It is unclear whether the other seven buildings were demolished or were never actually built and existed only on the blueprints. It is currently used by Changhai Hospital, which is affiliated with the Second Military Medical University.

The exterior facade of the old municipal hospital is light gray with decorative patterns. The building is a three-story reinforced concrete structure. In 1956, an additional floor was added in keeping with the original architectural style, making it a four-story building. The total floor area is 4,676 square meters, and it uses a reinforced concrete structure. The first director was Weng Zhilong, who also served as the president of the National Tongji University.

After the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan, the municipal hospital was converted by the Japanese army into a military hospital. After the victory, it was taken over by the Nationalist army and became the Army Joint Logistics General Hospital. After the liberation, it continued to be used by the military medical university.
